The Olympics have, historically, been a magnet for people who have some social issue they want to tell the world about. Unfortunately...terrorism seems to be the popular way for some groups to make their statements these days! I applaude the Chinese people for, at least , making the statement that they will be ready to oppose those groups that want to kill people to get their points across. Post 104 is correct in his/her post "To protect people from all over the world during Olympic period is one of the responsibilities of the government." . At least China is attempting to send a message that they are prepared to protect the people. I would feel safer there.

I wish we could see comparison pictures of what the USA has done to stem the threat of terrorism in our own Olympic games. It is also interesting that the press has not made much of an issue of this preparation here in this country.

Those guns on the Segways may look small but remember that each one has a magazine with 20-30 rounds in it, and the cops carry spares. Those guns may not be the most accurate things on the planet, but the whole point of having them is the intimidation factor posed by massed firepower. Collectively, they could take out an awful lot of people with just one burst.

Those SegTroopers just busted my up laughing and when I realized those guns were so small as to prevent much recoil a completely new vision of these guys appeared. -

Picture a swarm of these guys "charging" towards the enemy( not plugged into a charger ). A couple of guys fire off teargas grenades and the recoil immediately sends them going backwards in retreat. Remember, the Segway goes forward when you lean forward and goes backwards when you lean backwards. Now, you see a few SegTroopers come through the smoke and they fire on the bad guys and again, they quickly retreat backwards into the smoke after getting a couple of shots off. This goes on for as long as the batteries hold up on the SegTroopers. But, just before the final retreat, the Flamethrowers come forward, they fire a long blast, and then go backwards with a trail of flames looking like they have fired off a JATO rocket or something.

Realize that one of the distinguishing characteristics of the Chinese are that they are taller than other Oriental natives, generally speaking of course. But it is certainly a noticable difference. Those files of soldiers are big sized fellas, not short like the Japanese and Koreans, for example. Somehow, that makes them that much more impressive.

For all of you who are making fun of the segway guys: have you never seen a bicycle policeman? Thats a lot more useless.
The Segways are actually a truly excellent idea considering the circumstances. They offer a response and pursuit speed that's a lot better than running on your own feet. They are smaller and more maneuverable than a car or bicycle, and therefore better suited to the cramped conditions that will be present during the Olympics. Since they can be controlled with the knees, the operator has his/her hands free (as depicted) to use a weapon or apprehend a suspect.
Speed, mobility, small size, readiness and hands free operation. It seems like a winner to me. Maybe put a riot shield on the front?

(ref. photo 6) Is the middle barrier cutter the only one cutting properly? His sparks seem to be shooting backwards further than any of the others. Also....with regards to these..ahem...barriers...is the thought there that terrorists will somehow use the hurdles from track & field to form some sort of barrier?
